Got the motor running, warmed her up real well with new plugs. Pulled plugs to see what they looked like and had water in #2. Immediately ran a compression check on all cylinders. #1-140, #2-140, #3-145, #4-140. I am guessing head gasket on this problem. Does this sound right and how difficult is it to change. Seems simple. Replaced on a slant 6 Dodge in my younger days but never on an outboard!

Probably the head gasket and it's a walk in the park! You'll want a torque wrench that reads inch pounds instead of foot pounds when you put it back together. But foot pounds works too. There's a water jacket cover on it. That can stay on. All you have to take out are the obvious bolts.

Thanks! It looked pretty straight forward. Does the head need to be milled? If the leak is caused by gasket failure, I wouldn't see why, but is there any chance the leak could be a result of the head warping? Again, no experience with boat motors but cars I always had the heads milled and valves replaced. Nice thing about 2-stroke ... no valves!

Before you do anything else, pull the intake and check the reeds. Those compression #'s don't look like a blown head gasket. Mine had half of one reed gone and small chunk knocked off another on one cylinder. It would pull water from the exhaust back into that cylinder. <br />Never did find any of the pieces of mine, but you may want to pull the head to be sure they haven't damaged something in there, but I doubt it with those #'s. Intake is easy to pull, and probally can resuse gasket. Seal it with LIGHT coat RTV. don't let any squeeze into manifold.

Thanks, I will look at that as well. This late in the year, it will probably a winter project anyway so I may as well take my time!
