Force 120hp wont idle

Hello all, need a little help. I am running a 1998 18' Bayliner with a 120hp force 2 stroke. I was running slow (2000 rpm) for about 1/2 hour. The engine died and has not been able to idle after that. If I throttle up the motor will run but when put back into nuetral it dies right away. It will still go up to WOT without any issues once you are going. I have run this motor for two years now and have never had a proplem with starting and running. Not sure if I should be looking at spark or compression or something else??

any help would be great.

Clean plugs. Idle speed 750-800, in gear, in water/lake

Hello and thanks for the info. Last year I did change the plugs and I did clean them after the engine died but still not able to start without some throttle and will die as soon as you pull the throttle back. I have read on another post that the engine when low RPM needs a strong battery, I wanna say that trying to start the boat I am around 12.2 volts and when it is around 3000 to 5000 rmp the volts are sitting just under 13 (use the reading of the fish finder). I dont have the boat at home and wont be able to check until the weekend. But when I am at the boat nothing is around so i want to make sure I have everything.

Idle side (low speed jet) of one of your carbs has trash in it more than likely.

So I should not worry about taking any parts with me?

will check spark and compression and clean up the carbs.

I have been fighting my 75force with the same issue. I pulled the carb apart and using carb cleaner and a lot of compressed air thru the idle tube. It made immediate improvement.

Hi Bob, and welcome to iboats. I'm afraid that "Mike", from the looks of it, is no longer hanging around. This thread is over a year old and it doesn't seem like he stuck around much after getting his answers. Glad you're here though, so have some fun while you're at it.

Hello Bob,

The problem was a cracked ring on piston #4. took it apart with it on the boat still and changed the piston, rings, and bearing.
