Hi I'm both new to forums and boating so I hope this is in the right place.
I have just put a 1986 Force 125Hp onto our bowrider. The engine had been lying up for about 4 years. Before starting I checked the compression on all 4 cylinders and they were all at about 130 PSI. I replaced all spark plugs and cleaned the 2 carbs. The engine started first time and sounded great.
We took the boat out on the water and again started first time. We went through the no wake zone and then into open water. we opened the speed up slowly and all was fine. At about 1 mile out we slowed down and there was a noise from the engine which sounded like gears grinding. we turned around and came back to dock. Just before docking the engine cut out and would not restart. Now every time we try to start it it backfires.
I have checked the timing and it seems to be fine, although there are 4 markings on the flywheel, 3 of them are spaced within about 1/2 inch while the last one is on it's own, the timing mark lines up with the one on it's own wit the timing light.
I am getting good spark on all cylinders and the compression is still about 130psi.
Please help
