ok ive got a 1988 force 125 with a timining issue.ive only had this boat for a few months and its been slow running from the start.1st i replaced one coil, i went from 28mph to 30,them fixed the trim and i get only 32mph at a max 3800rpm
i noticed that the carbs only opened half way.Oh my prop is 17 degrees 13 1/2 inches.I found that somone had reversed the plasitc clevis on the timing advance linkage and it was hitting the engine block.NOw the carbs open 7/8 of full throttle, but the adjustment screw on the timing advance looks way off.Ive got a manual, and ive red it.MY question is must i ground the plug wires if i just jump the starter solenoid and not use the key to crank the motor over to check the timing????? i dont want to scew up my cdi.

First do a compression/spark test?
Top post is a post bt FrankA called a linc and sinc.
Do this after the compression /spark test.

Remove the cover, push throttle all the way forward, kick prop so it engages and the linkage goes all the way forward.
Look at the carb and see if it's advanced all the way.

Yes ground the wires if your gonna unhook them and turn the motor over.
See the pic of the wire thingy I made.

Yes you must ground the plug wires regardless of how you trigger the starter. You need to have the ignition switched on to get a signal from the plug wire to trigger the timing light. This means the CDI units are getting power and needs to discharge this power to a ground (spark plugs in the motor or plug wires grounded to earth).

People here have made some simple devices out of wood or metal to ground all the plugs. You may be able to search for the forum for them.

You type fast jerryjerry05. Beat me to it.

It wouldn't hurt to put it on the muffs even on slow running water or tub. Unless you have remote starter highly recommend having a partner to do the starting while holding the timing light.
