Im sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but where is the water intake on a older Force 125 engine. Where do i put the muff and hose?

New to this a picture would be great, and any other $0.02 is accepted

Thanks

Re: Force 125 Water intake?

On my force 120 they are at the bottom of the lower unit on the side in front of the prop. I have seen them on the side of the lower unit just above the barrel shape gear housing of the bottom of the lower unit. Should have four or six holes or slots. If you are working on it there are very reasonable prices on manuals on iboats website. There are some suppliers out there that offer free diagrams so they sell you the right part. Try ?Force Lower Unit? and you should get some hits with diagrams.

Re: Force 125 Water intake?

I have the exact same questions and after reading all the postings I still am wondering the same question as the poster. I placed the lower unit in a bin of water and it never "pee-ed" any water out. So I shut off the engine. I ran the engine for no more than 10 seconds at a time with several minutes before I started it again, and ran it again for 10 seconds, but it never "pee-ed" out any water. So whats up? I made sure the small grates on both side of the lower unit were submerged in water. the grate I was thinking was the intake is shown in front of the propeller in my picture. Please help :)

The slots in front of the prop are the water intakes. These engines are notorious for not priming on muffs and ten seconds is simply not long enough to see any water.

To run on muffs and prime the pump, you must first be certain that all the slots on both sides are covered and the muff has sufficient pressure to seal them from leakage. Then, the hose spigot must be set wide open to deliver enough pressure that water is squirting out from around the muffs vigorously. Then, you should see some water from a pee hole if you have one (They were not original equipment-most engines don't have one), or the idle relief vents in the rear shroud. Water should also be spraying from the exhaust snout.

BTW: Nice skeg on your engine. Don't usually see them in such good shape.

The slots in front of the prop are the water intakes.

So I can not stick the lower unit into a bucket of water then? I have to use forced water through "earmuffs" and garden hose?

I got really nervous letting it run without any proof of water being injested for cooling, as I have read that it doesn't take long for the water impeller to melt due to friction.

BTW: my skeg is broken and the picture is from a SELOC outboard manual book. I gotta get mine welded back on, I have it and it fits like a puzzle.

Re: Force 125 Water intake?

Like Franks says, the hose might not supply enough water. To run in a bucket/pail,you need to make sure that it's deep enough to cover the waterpump. The pump wont provide enough suction to draw it to the pump.
If U have ran it for a bit your pump might already be shot.Or it was bad and needed replacing.
Try starting it in the lake/river/ocean where ever U are.The two holes on the back should spray a lot of water then.Let it run till it either pumps water or the overheat buzzer goes off.
Or better still, change the impeller then U know for sure that it's OK. J
