Good afternoon all I hope you have some answers to my problem. I have a 1989 force 125hp that will not stay at idle. Every time I put it into neutral it either dies straight away or will run for a few seconds then die. Even if I put it into gear I need to gain a little rpm to keep it running

It runs with no problems when it’s on earmuffs. I can have it in neutral no problem, but the second I take it to the lake it won’t idle.

I’ve rebuilt the carbs and tuned them to factory recommendations. It has a new fuel pump in and and it’s only run on non-ethanol with a 50/1 ratio for the oil to gas

Please help!!!

Sounds like it has a lean setting of the air/fuel mixture screw at the carbs.
I think the OEM manual says 1 turn out from seated, try to turn the mixture screws 1 1/8 or 1 1/4 of a turn out from seated.
Maybe you have to adjust the idle screw too.
It should idle 1200 RPM at muffs and 7-800 RPM in water and in gear.

The first 4 posts in this section has tips for helping your motor.

The air screw set at 1 1/2 turn out.
Then adjust in the water in gear.
Not idling: it could be sucking air someplace?,
One TINY backfire//cough/stutter can blow the port cover gasket/s??
Do the starting fluid(SF) test.
Can of starting fluid, start motor, spray the SF around the "air intake side".
This includes under the coils, around the fuel pump, around and under the carbs.
If spraying makes the motor run different??? then it's sucking air someplace???

How did it run for you last season ?----Always start the trouble shooting with a compression test.----Post the values here.-----And when was the water pump serviced ?----Outboards should have a new impeller about every 5 years.
