I took my 1992 Force 150 to a guy who seems to know alot about these motors after syncing the carbs, adjusting the timing and a few other things he and I notice a strange hummm coming from an electrical module that seems to go to the spark plugs, he claims it is not normal. He said that he couldnt figure out why this was humming. He stated that there was power going to the "kill switch" wire because when he plugged it back in it gave a little spark, he says that it should not spark like that... Next thing u know we have NO spark on any of the plugs. He claims that some black box has failed and a new one will be at least $400.. This box is on the right side of the engine sits vertically.. Is this guy getting to me or what? could he have blown up this box? or could it be something simple..

You should have no power on any kill switch wire. If you do, the CD unit is bad. I don't know the current prices for those but you can search using the part number.

Re: Force 150 No Spark

Thanks John that must be what it is. I guess my question would be could this be something that has been going bad (I just bought the boat). Or could it be that he popped it somehow. The only thing I saw him do back there was with wires was disconnect the kill switch and use a remote switch to do some tests on the motor.

Re: Force 150 No Spark

Like anything electronic, they do fail from time to time.

The fast way to kill them is to motor the engine with the spark plug leads removed but not grounded. This causes feedback to the CDI and can fry them.

On old engines, it is hard to say what kind of abuse they have seen before the umteenth buyer purchaes it.

Good luck,

Re: Force 150 No Spark

on my 150, the first problem I noticed with my boat is that it would not start and the kill wire on the side terminal block above the starter solenoid was smoking. Very hot to touch.

This could be what this thread is about

Well I believe he def. motored the engine with plug wires removed and NO they were not grounded. Im guessing this is that Black box that sits vertically next to what looks like a a switch box. Im guessing that this is a CDI pack ?. He says a new one is about $383 is that right or could I get a used one somewhere.

Thought I would snap a quick pic. He claims that after testing, the box labeled "2321" is a part number or where could I find one . Sounds like he would be soaking me at $383 for this..

Re: Force 150 No Spark

I just did a quick test of the voltage regulator.

Looks like I get a reading from the Grey and Red wires in either direction The yellow wires have voltage in one direction and not the other.

Anyone know what that condition was would cause or is it normal.

Re: Force 150 No Spark

On the voltage regulator, the yellow wires come from the stator and are AC voltage. The red wire is DC voltage, the grey wire is AC voltage to the tach and the black, if you have one, is to ground.

You should get 18volts AC or so from the yellow wires to ground. You should also get a similar voltage from the grey wire.

From the red wire, you should get 13 to 14.5 volts DC to ground.
