force 15hp flywheel install problems

I recently bought a 1996 15hp mercury force outboard. The previous owner said he was trying to replace one of the coils(no spark in one cylinder), and managed to break the flywheel. I found a used matching flywheel and installed it. Now when i go to pull start i can hear the flywheel rubbing on metal and its very hard to crank. I took the flywheel off and turned the crankshaft with a wrench and it moves freely without any issue. Any idea what could be the problem? any help will be greatly appreciated.

You sure the flywheels are a direct swap?
If so then the coils on the timing plate are probably touching.
They need to be close but not touching.
Undo the one he replaced and push it towards the center of the plate.
Is one of the coils too high? Sticking up and rubbing the flywheel?

Thank you jerry.
I compared the dimentions of the new flywheel to mine before i bought it and they appeared to be the same. One thing i didnt measure is the inside diameter of the hole that fits on the shaft. It might be a bit wider. Going to the hardware store to find something to make a flywheel remover couldnt find one in town.

Ill post what i find after i remove the flywheel.

The flywheel has three holes in the top for a puller. 1/4-20 I believe.

So i managed to pop off the flywheel old school. I put on the old broken flywheel and made a line on the shaft. Put the new one on and it sits about 3/32 lower. I guess the inside diameter is wider than the original. Looks like i need to find a flywheel from the same year.

So I found a matching flywheel and put it on. Now I'm not getting and spark. Im not sure if I need to post this in another thread so let me know if I should repost somewhere else. Is there some sort of timing I need to adjust on it or what else can I do to get it running. I set the coils all the way back away from the flywheel maybe they need to be closer? And help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

1. How are you measuring the gap between coils and flywheel? You might need a jig if its critical.

2. Old magneto systems mowers with coils outside flywheels, we set them close using index cards.

3. This might work inside if a strip of card etc is taped on the coil, let the magnets pull them in,
turn flywheel's mags away and tighten coils (tweak for drag on card if needed).

4. Use your Ohmmeter to know all grounds are good.

5. With the plugs out and grounded good are you turning by hand or both?

6. Have you checked your coils and ignition system components and how???

I hope this will spark some needed adjustments/tests or help from some direct experienced owner.

ill try taping a strip of an index card on the coil thats a good idea. I tested the spark with an inline tester that connects between the plug and the coil and it flashes when i pull the cord. Installed new plugs yesterday too. So there is spark but it wont even light up the starting fluid i spray in the plug holes. Anybody out there seen anything like this before? Starting to loose hope....
