you test the impeller with your eyes...so you need to pull the lower leg off and examine the pump..its a wothwhile change anyway. When testing make sure you have the leg 6-9 in under water muffs dont always work well

Also check the seal that goes between the water pump and the tube leading up to the engine. This can be worn or have just slid up the tube too for the water pump to make a good seal on it.

Tach and stuff 001.jpgTach and stuff 002.jpgChange it.While testing for flow,it should come out the snout under the cavitation plate. And the one or two holes on the mid leg.
You need a big bucket(don't like)or the right muffs.Regular muffs won't work right for some reason.Right muffs, see pic.
Using the bucket you can't tell if the water's comming through the snout.

Once you get it the way you want, install a tell tale.On the motor.Real easy to do.J

Sounds like the vanes on the impeller have already failed. There may be just enough left of them to pump at higher rpm's, but unless you want to rebuild your motor cough up the $16 bucks and change it. You can run with muffs or a barrel, I run a deep barrel trying to mimmick lake conditions. I will often submerge the leg very low into the tank past the cavitation plate. This ensures water pressure into the pump cavity. The square muffs can be found at walmart for $12 or so.
