Need advice, please. I took my 1989 Force 125 hp l-drive engine in for a tune-up and possibly put in hotter plugs during the first part of June. The dealer is a Bayliner/ Mercury certified dealer. I still do not have my boat back (August 20th). Any suggestions what I should do next would be appreciated. I took it in because my plugs would get fouled up when I would run the engine at a slow speed for about an hour. The service agent said the would tune it up and switch the plugs. On July 1st I received a call from the dealer we found your problem, loose wires, we will have the boat ready tomorrow, new plugs, tuned up and the loose wires fixed. The next day they called, ops, we have a bigger problem, the stator needs to be replaced, $600. Upon replacing the stator they called again and said the flywheel needs to be replaced, $700 for a new one. They suggested a used one would be the best bet. After they looked and had the regional Mercury rep.resentative look they could not find one. I then found one myself on e-bay for $325, which I purchased and took into the dealer. The mechanic said the used flywheel was good. He then installed the new stator and used flywheel. Then they called me again with a new problem, the mechanic now claims the cd box is no good and the service department states the box will be $500. It seems to me the mechanic is experimenting and either is replacing the wrong items or is blowing electrical parts and is expecting me to pay for them. I don't know what I should do next, if I replace the the cd box, will the mechanic then call me with a new problem? What is the dealer's responsibilitty, afterall when I checked it in with them in June the boat ran well at both high and low speeds except for occasional fouled plugs that I would replace and it would run well agaain for a month before the plugs would become fouled again. I am retired and can't afford a new boat, so please give me some other advise other then buying a new boat. Thank You.

Slow running (under wot) will foul plugs. Just remove and clean after each use. Your service person is probably making quite a handsome profit reselling your functioning parts. If it were me, I'd get real mad and hire a go gettum attn.

Thank you for the words of wisdom, I am returning to the marine repair dealer today, with the same thoughts you shared. I hope the owner of the marine dealer will agree.

He should have had you switch to a synthetic oil, and sent you to the lake.

He now wants you to pay $2200-$2400 for all the parts and labor, for a boat that is really only worth a fraction of that, and will be worth a lot less when any part of the drive system fails.

Sounds like they are totally incompetent at what they profess to be professionals at. I can see finding multiple problems, but this sequence of events is ridiculous.

I would not pay a dime.
I doubt that hiring a lawyer or any sort of action will solve anything.
Technically, I believe the flywheel would still belong to you, as would any personal property on the boat. But the dealer just bought the rest.

Easiest and best way out of this one, would be to take the $2400 and go buy a different boat. And not an L-drive or a Force this time.

It would be a hard pill to swallow, but really the only move that makes sense at this point.

roscoe,I could see not getting an L drive but to suggest not getting another force is taking it a little far. These motors are one of the ,if not THE simplest motors to work on for first timers and D I Y ers. That sounds like what he needs is something easy to work on ,and with help from this site,he can be walked through most anything. You have your opinion and everyone else has theirs, and that's what makes this country so great, but this site is for and about force/chrysler motors and various problems that go along with them.I have owned other motors, but for ease of repair and reliability I myself like the FORCE motors.ANYONE else want to put their two cents in?
