After two years of great boating, my Force 1990 90 hp L drive lower unit would not shift. It was stuck in forward, so I drained the oil, and sprayed in Liquid Wrench in, hoping whatever was stuck would become unstuck. It became unstuck ok, now in neutral, only I think the problem is worse just by how it feels. It think the gears inside are not meshing at all. Have done research on this and other forums, and realize the best thing at this point, instead of buying a lot of special tools, is to buy a used lower unit. Does someone know what years and horsepower lower units I can buy that will work? Does it have to be an L drive? For example, would a 1989 120 hp outboard Force lower unit work? Or a 1993 90 hp outboard? Also, I see some 85 hp lower units for sale, but the rod linking up to the engine appears to be about 2 feet long, and the one on my lower unit is about three inches long. If I bought the 85 hp lower unit, can I swap out these two rods? Appreciate any help on this.

I also have an L-Drive 120 set up ( hate it atm ) I believe the L/U although different part number are inter-changeable 90-125 LD being that they are 3, and 4 cylinders respectfully find a force expert in you area if possible and ask I'll ask the mechanic who is currently working on mine also.

As for the shifting rod they are screw in rods you can switch them out but be warned doing so can be tricky. When you drained the L/U did you remove the lower right Phillips head screw if not DON'T . I'll wait for your reply to see where you are at .
