You may have a bad seal under the waterpump, on the driveshaft.
Or it could be the shiftshaft seal.
Or the prop shaft seal.

But hopefully it is just a bad gasket on the oil drain or fill screw. They should be replaced with new ones everytime you change the lower unit oil.

I would replace the screw gaskets and test run it in water. If this fixes the leak, it will save you lots of work.

Take your prop off and look at the prop shaft next to the bearing cage. Fishing line can get tangled up there and cause damage to that seal. If the seal is damaged you can replace it without taking the whole lower unit apart. I took a fill screw to the hardware store and bought a stainless screw with the same type thread (I think 3/4 inch) I drilled a hole in the middle of it and put a basketball needle in it and sealed it up with liquid gasket adhesive. Put lower unit under water and watch for bubbles. Hope it is a bad washer like previously mentioned.

Taking the lower unit apart can be a major task but with the manual and a seal kit you should be able to do it. Buy yourself some disposible vinyl gloves. There is nothing worse than the smell of lower unit oil on your hands

Good Luck

You put a basketball needle in the hole and seal it with gasket compound. when you have the lower unit in the water with this new screw in the vent hole (the top hole) you put air pressure in it with an air pump. Dont use a lot of pressure but you will see air bubbles come from where it is leaking.

I have tried to find an actual plug that marine techs use for this and have had no luck. When they ask me my model and make they tell me they dont work on them because they are too old.
