I have been tackling the task of replacing the water pump (complete water pump kit) in Force 35. All said and done, still not pumping water.Boat was purchased used and already taken apart by previous owner. My questions are 1) when installing the impeller into the water pump housing do i need to rotate it clockwise or counter-clockwise and question 2) where the drive shaft passes through the seal in the water pump housing, should the shaft and the seal have a tight fit? Im beginning to thing the drive shaft and the seal not having a tight fit is causing me problems and "leaking " the water rather that pumping it to the powerhead. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome, fill out the profile and locaion.
You might be close to someone who can help.
The impeller will orient itself once it's started.
Yes a tight fit.
Pics?
You sure the kit's the right one?

1. You can tell which way to install the impellor by just pulling over the engine and see which way the flywheel turns, I always put a little Vaseline on the impellor to give it some lubrication to get it started. On my 40hp there are two plastic washers that help seal the shaft where it goes through the housing above and below the impellor. Also my 40 does not run well on the hose, in fact I thought it wasn't pumping either. Then I got a trash barrel and cut it 26" high and run the engine in there and it pumps like a champ...after that I built a rectangular box to run it in, I run pink stuff through it in the Fall...don't forget a drain hole and plug.

Word of advice? Always take photos of anything your taking apart. Unless you have a photographic memory.....

Looking down on the lower unit, you turn the drive shaft clockwise as you push down on the pump body. Lubricate the impeller and pump body with dish detergent. Rotating will make it easier to set the impeller into the pump body and the detergent will keep it from scuffing the ends of the vanes.

The upper seal should be snug, not tight and simply riding on the shaft is enough. If it is worn to the point where it does not contact the shaft, replace the seal AND the plastic locator ring. Usually there is this ring in position. Because the impeller is set into the pump eccentric, the wear ring is usually in place between the seal and pump body to properly locate the drive shaft. Some pumps do not have a ring. Check the schematics for your particular engine.

The upper seal is a "redundant" seal. If you look at the impeller, there is a raised ridge along both sides which really does the sealing against the stainless plate and the pump body. Thus, a worn upper seal will not cause an overheating problem due to lack of water.
