After I put my boat in the water I have to run about 1/8 mile in a no wake zone and the motor runs great, good stream of water from tell-tale.
It also runs fine at higher speeds. On the way back in the no wake zone at low speeds the stream of water stops and heat alarm goes off. If I let it cool down it will start back up and it will shoot out a good stream of water from the tell-tale. I changed out the impeller about a year ago.
Could it be the thermostat?

Could be thermostat, but that shouldn't stop the water flow out the telltale. Could be you got a plastic bag stuck on your water intake. Or sucked in some weeds or other debris.

I guess I would watch it real carefull the next time out.

I had the same exact problem with my 1988 force 85hp. You might want to check the impeller again. Have you been running it in shallow areas where it might have sucked something up? Also remove the tstat check it and see if any debris is stuck on it. Good luck.

Re: Force 40 Overheating

Craig, you have a tell tale on a Force 40? My 40 only has two relief holes on the rear of the leg. I would recheck the impellor - when you gou outbound, the cold motor is not working hard, and a poor circulation of water is enough to keep it cool. At high speed, the ram effect of water on the intake is maybe enough to keep cool. Inbound, you have a hot motor, and poor circulation cannot get rid of that heat, so temp alarm goes off. This is just theory, but I would still check the impellor. On my own motor, all I ever see is spray from the relief holes - at all speeds - and I've never had a problem with overheating.
Hope this helps,
Bill
