no spark on force 40hp. red stator with stator adapter box. disconnected black/yellow wire no spark. Disconnected yellow wires to rectifier no spark. 668 ohms between white and green stator wires. no reading from either green/white wire from stator to ground. blue wire from stator adapter box to ground no reading on meter. trigger ohmed out good. Any help would be appreciated.

Need to know what year to determine exactly which ignition system you have.

Sounds like you might have the Mercury Switch Box ignition system? To be 100% sure, if you can post a picture, that will give us a better idea.

I'm making the assumption that you have the Switch Box ignition system:

No other checks for the key switch if you've already disconnected the Black/Yellow wire at the Switch Box. The ignition system is self energizing and doesn't need a battery to operate. You can disconnect the battery and pull start the motor and it will run fine (if you're getting spark, fuel etc).

Make sure the magnets under the inner circumference of the flywheel are all there and none missing or cracked in half etc. There should be 6 magnets.

If all the magnets are intact, check for AC voltage output of the stator. Set your meter for at least 200 volts AC and measure across the White/Green and Green/White stator wires while cranking the motor. You should see something in the neighborhood of about 140VAC or so. You need a DVA adapter to get an accurate reading, but for this instance, all you are looking for is some AC voltage going to the Switch Box. If you have AC voltage going to the Switch Box, but no spark, then most likely the Swicth Box is bad.

No Title

so this is what the parts of the ignition system look like except for the stator it only has 4 wires yellowe, yellow, green, white/green. the green and white wires plug into a small adapter box with a blue wire going to the other component.

how does one go about checking the switch box if this model has one

So I have around 300v with the dva at the stator. I have around the same from the blue wire from the stator adaptor to ground. Trigger ohms good. Disconnected rectifier no spark. Flywheel magnets are good. No mercury switch that I can see unless it's inside the switch box. Where do I go from here? Is there a way to test the switch box? Ohming it out some how? Exspensive don't want to buy one if it's something else

I hear you as far as the cost of the Switch Box. I don't know of any test that you can perform on the Switch Box itself with a multi-meter.

Check your grounds too. Make sure that the plate that the coils and Switch Box are mounted on is grounded. There is a black jumper wire that goes from the plate to the engine block.

The fact that you have voltage going to the Switch Box but no spark, and the trigger OHM's out fine, then the Switch Box itself is suspect.
