Re: Force 40 spits water
The force motor doesn't have the tell tale stream like other outboards. They have exhaust relief holes, which is what you are seeing the spit come out of. You will see spit, steam, and exhuast come out of these holes. The amount of spit will vary with the RPMs. I have a 92 50hp which kind of drools at idle. The more tell-tale like stream is actually under the water line next to the front right LU bolt. If you had it on muffs, you would see water coming from that hole.

However, if you are concerned, you can test your temp sensor circuit to ensure you will get proper signal and the motor shutdown if it does overheat. You can also feel the powerhead after a good run. You should be able to put your hand on it for a few seconds and have it hot but not burning. Another thing to check is the t-stat to make sure it is opening and closing correctly.

These are all simple things to check without dropping the leg to check and replace the impeller. You might check to see when the impeler was last replaced as it is considered to be preventative maintenance. Although, it doesn't sound like you have any problem..
