I recently bought a 1990 or 1991 Gamefisher/Force 5 hp outboard on eBay.

Started the motor today for the first time and noticed that there was no water coming from the water pump "weep" holes at idle, so I ordered the water pump "kit" (and a seal kit) for this motor from mercruiserparts.com.

How hard is it to replace the water pump on this motor? From the exploded parts diagram (all I have until the service manual arrives) it looks pretty straightforward: remove the lower gear unit and replace the pump, then reassemble. But maybe I'm missing something??

Questions:

1. Does the propeller shaft normally need to be removed to drop the lower gear unit?

2. How long does this job usually take? I am a competent home mechanic (I've rebuilt several automotive motors and have a complete set of tools). From the parts diagram it seems like it shouldn't take more than an hour or so.

3. Is this as straightforward as it appears (meaning, "can I do this without waiting for the service manual?")

TIA,

Jeff
