Hey guys I just got my 88 Force 50 mounted yesterday and am currently in the process of hooking up linkages, getting supplies for maintenance, etc. and will probably have several questions in the meantime. The linkages look pretty straight forward, and I plan on changing the lower unit oil (no biggie) and plugs right off, but I'm not gonna tear the whole thing apart until I see how well it runs. (I did see it run on a stand before purchasing last fall).

One thing I noticed is it has a provision for a overheat light/buzzer (not sure which one) My boat has no gauges or anything. I plan on possibly adding a gauge kit down the road but for now I would like to have an overheat indicator. What are my options here? I would like to keep it temporary so if I do decide to any gauges next year I can decide the permanent layout at a later point.. Also does this motor have a telltale or somewhere I can visually see the water pump working?

Other than that, could anybody recommend a good lower unit oil and spark plug? Like I said I want to get it up and running before I tear apart the carb or anything like that (good chance it may not need it this season) Thanks for all the help guys!

We added a digital water temp gauge, I can't tell you how good it feels to look down at it and know your motor isn't burning up.
We have a 125hp and it has a overhear buzzer.
We have a two hole exhaust that water comes out after 30-60 seconds after startup.
I don't know if any force motors have the single indicator stream that shoots far.
Lower unit gear lube, anything works for a season, synthetic may be better you decide.
We use NGK - BUHX plugs, you could go to NGK web site search for your motors plugs.
You can visually see if the water pump is working by looking at the two holes exhaust for water coming out.

Changing gear oil: don't remove the screw on the side of the lower/
Pull the plugs and see whats in there? Replace with that and L-82c is what came with it.
Make sure the gap is the same. Measure the old(both) and set yours at that.

Buzzer, did the motor come with controls?
Some have a buzzer built in??
If not the wiring harness comes with an overheat circuit (motor come with cable)and adding any 12v horn will work.

Telltale, you can add one to your motor.Top of your head were the plugs go is a silver screw.
It might be hard to remove, take it out and install an elbow fitting and run a hose out the side of the bottom cowl.

Using the 2 holes in the back of the motor might work for some.
Most of the exhaust/ water comes out the snout on the lower unit.
On some motors there is a pressure relief system.I don't think you have this.
It usually gets clogged soon after running.
My 88's both pressure reliefs clogged and stuck open.
That allows the water to come out the mid section shortly after the motors are started.

Thanks for the response guys. I attempted to start the motor and it fired right up! First revolution of the flywheel (must run good) I also got the lower unit oil changed. This was a used motor with the wiring harness intact but a lot of it was cut/tied back. Which color wire would be for my overheat horn (and what is the other end in the motor connected to so I can trace it) Also I think I want to go with a temperature gauge and a pressure gauge and ditch the telltale idea. Where would I put the sensors for each gauge on the motor and is there a kit I can buy for each? Thanks so much for all the help

The temp sensor is located on the head and has an orange lead.
Don't know where to buy the kits but I heard they are available,
But testing and maintaining the OEM system might be best.
The buzzer or horn under the dash should be enough.

The orange lead is all you need for the system.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately my motor did not come with a buzzer. The orange wire is intact however and I did find the switch. I ordered a buzzer that also has a red light built into it (Cole Hersee 4112-RC) and need help wiring it. I am going to re post in the electrical section. Thanks again.
