What year is this 50 HP? Does it has the Prestolite, CDI or Thunderbolt ignition system?

Its a 1990 not sure which is which but 3 blue boxes 2 coils 1 cdi i took all the elctronics together and found a wire squished under a bolt in the center where the bracket mounts 2 circle things. Fixed that i have the coils and cdi hanging off the side, now i sometimes have spark and somtimes not, there is probably a loose connection somewhere still digging through all the connectors 1 by 1 and resoldering.
In the mean time how to i trst spark. Im just leaving the spark plug plugged in to the spark plug wire and placing it close next to the block and checking to see if i see spark. Is this correct?
Thanks
Jack

The best way to test for sparks is with the use of inline spark tester. You can get one from any auto shop and they costs less than $10.

The trigger leads can be part of the problem. Or a bad ground.
Under the ends of the trigger wires, the connector breaks free from the wire.
It can still appear connected but not make contact.
Pull on each trigger lead and see if one comes loose.

Outboardignition.com has test procedures.

Get GOOD testers as the cheap ones are just that.
