Force 50 Questions

Hello all,

I am pretty new here, and I've done a little research on these Force engines. I'm finding it's somewhat stressful to find parts for these engines, and to figure out what the devil is wrong with them.

I do have the Clymer manual, so I have been following it's directions to trouble shoot.

I have a 1987 Force 50, the model number is 507X7C. I am first off looking for coil packs, and all I have been able to find are ones that are $250 to $300, I'm thinking this is a little over priced, but I have no idea. I should say that "I THINK" it's the coils.

Next, the paint is peeling off of some of the motor, and the engine cover has a pretty big crack in it. Now I can repair the crack with fiberglass from the inside of the cover, the pain is another story. I do not know what kind of paint to buy, and is there a specific prep system to painting an outboard motor?

first of all are you thinking coils because you have no spark i dont know about the 87 but mine is a 1985 it has points i thought the coils because i had no spark i cleaned the points and regaped them runs great now you have to explain the the whole question to get a response hope that helps

Ok, The reason I think it's the coils and not the points is that the 1987 Prestolite CD ignition system does not have points. It goes from the trigger to the CD module ignition coil assembly and then to the piston. Also I get current to the blue, orange, green, and white/green wires that feed to the coil packs from the trigger. They all have current when I have the starter turning the fly wheel, and there is no spark from the coil to the plugs. I used a simple current tester light with an alligator clamp and a pin. The light in the tester should have flickered as the coils fired, but nothing on either coil pack.

i have an 87 force 50. mine had no spark when i purchased it. the points were bad and needed to be changed. be warned, they arent cheap.

buy a clymers manual and check the instructions for regapping the points. BEWARE - my old points were pretty fragile. the plastic cracked when i was trying to clean one of them. i had to get a replacement set and it was $40 or $50.

If you truly think its electrical, check it with a multimeter.
