Force 50 runs rough

I just purchased a 14' Bayliner with a 50hp Force Engine. The lady who sold it to me said that she had not used the boat for about 6 months. The engine turns on after a few tries but tends to be very rough once it is on. It does smooth out after it warms up. Why does it run so rough? What considerations should I take since the boat was not used for such a long time? any suggestions?

Re: Force 50 runs rough

Some 2 strokes just run lumpy when cold. First, I would use fresh fuel/oil mix, clean out the carbs, and change the lower unit lube. If you don't know when the impeller was last serviced, replace it. Go for the decarb treatment while you're at it. Good luck! (Posted at the exact same moment as 12Footer, so some similarities may be noted
:D )

Welcome to the iboats forum,manix.
If you have not drained the fuel tanks, do so before going out in this boat. You will also want to drain the entire fuel system (Carb bowl and all). Remove the screen on the starboard side of the engine, mounted on the fuel pump with one screw in the center of a 2" round housing labled "FILTER", and clean it.
6 months is long enough to have the gas go bad with 2cycle fuel.
I would pull the lower unit, and change out the impeller, as it is probably due,and has formed a shape to the housing..It will werk initially, but not for long.
While you have the lower unit off (Much easier job than it sounds), and drain it into a pan. Examine the lube's color. It should be black, translucent green, but not streaky or milkshake color. This would indicate water contamination, and a bad seal or two.
Feel for chunks of metal with your finger.
If found, you have gear damage from the water or striking something.
Order a shop manual now,as it will pay for itself many times over, I promise.
This engine is 1968 technolgy, and burns very dirty. As a result, it will need frequent decarbing and spark plug changes.
If you don't have a compression gauge, borrow or rent one from the nieghborhood auto parts store or car wrench guy, and test the compression warm.

There's an echo in here :) Yup.It has a bad seal or two. You can find it/them with a bicycle pump and a garbage can full of water. fit the pump to the lower unit vent or fill screw holes, and instal the other screw. Submerge the lower unit in the gabage can,and pump it up to 10PSI,and look for bubbles. This will give you an idea of what seals are leaking.

Thanks. Now I am new at this boating stuff as you can see. It is simple enough to do it myself or should i get professional help in dismantling the motor?

My Force 50 tend to lean sneeze when cold. This is indicated by a miss of the motor and sneeze type sound exiting the carb throat. I have heard that there is nothing much to do about it and that these engines are prone to lean sneezing.. Once warm it smoothes out nicely.

Mannix, it all depends on your compliment of tools, and how good you are at using them, and if you have the shop manual within reach. If you have ever changed-out the water pump on a car, you can do it on the ouboard. Sometimes, it's more complicated, sometimes less. I can tell you this..The first time is the hardest. It takes 2 hours the first time, and les than an hour anytime after that.
