I have an older Force 50 (not sure what year) that has problems shifting. When the motor is running, it won't go into neutral. Forward and reverse work fine, but the prop always spins fast in the direction of what ever gear it was in last. i.e. goes from forward to reverse and vice versa but never finds neutral inbetween.
thanks alot for any help.

Re: Force 50 shift problems

I don't know how to fix your problem, but DO NOT spray any of that mix while you are trying to start the engine.

I did it on my friends this weekend and that carb shot up a flame about 5 feet. Burned all the hair off my arms. Not a joke. Be Careful spraying that stuff in the carb..

Re: Force 50 shift problems

Hi Mike,
Is the choke working when the key is pushed in? If not measure the voltage on the blue/white wire that goes to the choke solenoid, if you have the voltage with the key pushed in but the choke still dosn't work it's a bad choke solenoid. If there isn't any voltage present with the key pushed in, then the key switch, or the wireing is bad.
If everthing works, then hold in the key while cranking until the engine fires then let the key back out, and continue cranking until the engine starts.
Hope this helps

Re: Force 50 shift problems

Somehow, those 2 post got crossed-up with another post..I've only seen that happen a couple times, and it really throws ya

Anyway, You might check this link out on later model Force control run-out.

http://www.performancemarine.net/bulletin/oemoutboard/bullet/92/oo92_22.pdf

In the meantime, I would drain and refill the lower unit, to inspect the lube. This is a good indication of what is going on with the gearcase.
We need to rule-out that first.
Here is a quick link to Lower Units 101 which might help..
And welcome to iboats:)
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=011919

Re: Force 50 shift problems

I completely took apart the lower unit just recently: replaced the lube, gears all looked fine. I noticed that the shift shaft seems difficult to pull/push when the unit is fully assembled. Is that normal? Also, with the motor off I can manipulate the gear it's in and feel by turning the prop that it goes into forward, reverse and neutral, but when the motor is on the prop is always spinning (fast). Any ideas? Thanks so much for your help.
