I have a 1990 Force 50. I had it running in a bucket and it seemed to be doing pretty well. It did get really hot though to the point where if I threw water on top of the head the water would boil. I took the lower unit off and inspected everything and put it back on and it was pumping great water and seemed to be cooler except I noticed water coming out of the spark plug holes and it bogged down a bit while running.

I'm assuming the problem is the water jacket gasket which is the red thing there in the picture. My question is how do I go about getting the water jacket gasket off since it seems to be stuck. Do I just pry in between until it comes off?

Also the compression on the cylinders is good but that piston looks pretty bad. Do you think it's a problem?

What's the compression? How'd you take it?
The red stuff is silicone that's cooked and oozed out the edges, just pry it off.
Once the screws(might be as many as 12) are out the cover should come off.
Water from the plug holes: bad head gasket, cracked block.
The pistons look bad but if the edges aren't compromised they should work.
BUT!! if you got it that hot I'd consider new rings??
Running in a bucket: you need to be REALLY deep in the bucket, 4inches over the cavitation plate. Replace the impeller, sop.

The motor needs an overhaul.----Running with wrong prop.----Lugging the motor.----Preignition. ---Overheating. ----Caused the damage to the piston,

The bucket was deep. I believe the reason it got too hot was because the water pump wasn't attached to the tube since there was water coming out of the shift shaft initially when it was getting hot.

Since I don't see any cracks in the block I'm assuming the only reason there's water coming out of the spark plugs is because of the head gasket? And once I scrape all the red silicone off of the head cover do I have to replace the silicone or can I leave it plain?
