I have no problem starting my 50hp (2 cylinder) Force and will run it for an hour or so....but watch out. I shut it down and it won't restart. Appears after 20 minutes or so (maybe cools down) it starts like there was never a problem. What can I check?

Re: Force 50hp - doesn't restart

Well, I don't think I explained myself to well. When it doesn't restart I met it is completely shut down as if the battery isn't in the boat. I crossed the wires (which removed the neutral switch in the throttle) but it didn't seem to matter. Can something electrically overheat and needs to cool down before cranking?
Thx

Check fuel pump diaphragm for either bulging, holes or tears. Sounds like the motor is flooding. Bet if you took the spark plugs out and aired it out it would start faster. I had a similar problem when my carb throttle was set too high.

I need a clarification. Does the engine turn over after it shuts down. Do you have spark if the engine turns over. If the engine does not turn over look for a poor battery connection. If you have spark look for over fueling as that's the same problem I am working on with my 50 horse force.Next time it happens i would dry the spark plugs like eurolarva suggested. This is what I have been doing.

The engine doesn't turn over. I turn the key and nothing happens....
twenty minutes later after doing nothing it decides to crank and start as if there was never a problem.

start with your battery connection and work from there. And by that I mean check all connections [ solenoid ,battery cable terminals, starter, ignition switch ,etc]you are losing power at one of the connections and your going to have to check things to find it, either with a test light ,or logic probe and you may be able to rig up a buzzer out of an old door buzzer from a car [its like a audible test light ,you can here it when you get power instead of having to have another person help you] hope this helps. You are going to need to put a voltmeter on the battery and see what is happening. If voltage does not go up to around 13 volts when the boat is running chances are your charging system is not working and that is why nothing works. Batteries tend to slowly build back a charge after cooling down awhile and that would explain why you are able to start after a cool down period. If you have a trolling motor battery you could try and connect that to the outboard and see if that will start the battery. My guess would be your voltage rectifier is shot and the battery is not charging. If not this you could be having the opposite where the charging system is putting out high voltages of over 16 volts and boiling the battery. Either way you need to use a volt meter. Home Depot sells them for under 20 bucks and they are well worth it.

Re: Force 50hp - doesn't restart

I appreciate all the advise and will get to work on it. It's not the end of the world to get it fixed, therefore I will probably tinker a little as time permits. I'll post results within a few weeks.
Thanks ALL!

there is a reset on the left side of the motor by electric hook up, in the back, see if the reset button is out. push in and see if it starts, if so you have a bad reset replace it about $12 dollars.

Re: Force 50hp - doesn't restart

random thought, but i have 1994 70 force and theres time that there is no power and there is a little fuse right by the switch box in the motor and if i take it off and wipe it down and put it back in full power. not sure if it helps, but its a small thing that causes a big problem that i have figured out. let me know if it helps.

Re: Force 50hp - doesn't restart

All,
This is what I found today:
- a loose ground wire on the relay and a very small think wire wrapped around the 20 amp fuse on the motor. I grounded and replaced the fuse...good news it is starting every time. I think I'm good to go...
Thanks all for your ideas....
