Force 70hp Lower Unit spline spacer

Greetings,

I tore down my 70hp Force a while back to rebuild the power head. After pulling out the lower end, I noticed a black plastic spacer(about 1/2" to 5/8" tall) layer on the ground that had apparently come off the end of the drive shaft spline. It fits on the spline. I can't see this in any diagrams. What does it do? I can certainly put it back on the spline before re-installation. Concerned about anything else that could have fell on the ground that I didn't find (washer?).

Also, this space is slightly inset on one side. It looks like the inset side should face down away from the power head. Is that correct?

Thanks to anyone who can help with this rather obscure question.

Jerry,

Can't get you a picture and a Mod # for a couple days. I'm away. I've searched the net some though and I'm thinking it may be something that's supposed to keep water/exhaust away from where the spline fits into the crank. Assuming that, there probably was also some kind of "seal" or washer too. I've ordered what I think is the right the seal. I'm guessing the part I do have is the retainer which seems to be "unavailable" anyway.

None of the drive shaft housing gaskets in my kit look like mine and contain no gasket for the exhaust tube. I'm thinking the old gasket doesn't look too bad. Maybe I'll button it up with the old gasket and make one for the exhaust tube - any thoughts? Silicone ?

Re: Force 70hp Lower Unit spline spacer

Okay, I figured my issue out. The reason I thought I was missing something (seal) on the lower unit spline was that I was ! Apparently it was missing for some time - not as a result of my removing the lower unit.

There was a spacer there but the rubber seal - meant to keep water away from the join between the male and female ends of the spline had been missing all along (even before my disassembly).

The fact that it was missing didn't seem to effect removing the shaft nor did it look corroded, however I did order the missing rubber seal. Might as well do a proper install

Hope this helps someone else.

You sure it's not stuck up inside the housing??Get a light and take a look.
Will make it harder to put back on if it's still up there.J

Not to worry, the powerhead was pulled and searched for it as well.

Thanks ~ Rick
