Hey guys, just bought my first boat today. It's an 86 Bayliner Capri with an 85hp Force. Most recent registration sticker on the boat is 04, previous owner is my landlord who swears he had it professionally winterized 2 years ago and has not taken it out of storage since. Got it all cleaned up and took it out today and it did alright for itself but could certainly use a tuneup. Since summer is almost over my plan is just a basic refresh for now then a more in depth tear down this winter when I have time but for now I just want to get on the water. The plan is replace the plugs, new fuel filter, rebuild the fuel pump and a new impeller.

I found the impeller here on iboats, does it come with whatever gasket I need or can someone point me to the gasket? I've never replaced one before as this is my first boat but with the step by step in the FAQ here it seems like something I could pull off.

Next there's a kit here on iboats for the fuel pump, is that what I'm looking for when I read all these threads about rebuilding the fuel pump or is there more? Seems like the kit is just a couple gaskets.

Next for the filter is there an actual replacement filter somewhere? Everything I see here is inline filters but it doesn't have an inline filter on it now just one up attached to the block. Can I just add an inline filter then remove the old one and leave it open there?

Thanks for all the questions from a rookie, hopefully someday I have enough experience to turn around and reshare your knowledge with another newbie.

Re: Force 85 Tune up parts

Filters: I suggest a water/fuel seperating filter.Put it between the tank and the squeezie.
Then a filter between the pump and the carb.Wally World G-2 or G12 something like that(depends on the hose).
Clean the carbs first. Then if they are corroded worry about a rebuild.
Set the carbs air screws at 1 turn out or at the most 1 and 1/16th out
The fuel pump is just a diaphram and a couple of gaskets.Take pics as you take it apart.
No leave the screen filter in the pump.Very little restriction and it just might catch something.
The impeller usually comes with just the impeller. There is no gasket under the pump but under the wear plate is a gasket. Most times it's not removed so no replacement is needed.
Take pics as you take it apart.
The lower unit there is a screw on the side DON"T touch the screw!!! MIght cost a lot of $$$$ to replace!!!
There is an allen head set screw that is the drain plug.
Get a manual.
Don't touch the timing.
And remember no such thing as a dumb question.
Profile, location? You might be close to someone who can help??
