I picked up a new (to me) boat this week with an 85hp Force which was sold as a non-runner.

I have the engine running now but I've noticed that the lower leg moves for and aft when you push/pull it. Is this right? On removing the engine cover I could see the whole engine rocking on its mounts. There seems to be an 'L' shaped bracket at the rear of the power head with four bolts and this looks as though it has sheared although there is a gap of about 3/8" between the metal plates and it never gets smaller when the engine moves so welding it wont help.

I think the engine is a late 80's although I can't find a model/serial number at the moment..

Your upper motor mount has failed. It's kinda involved to replace. The powerhead has to come off. To make it easier to work on, take the gearcase off too. You should rebuild the water pump anyhow. Parts should be limited to the mount and a few gaskets. Could be lower mounts, but I'mm betting on the upper.

Can I weld it back together in situ (with a new 'L' bracket inside the old one)?
