Force 85hp Tilt/Trim Pipe Connections?

I have an 85hp Force (circa 1990) with tilt/trim that I bought as a non-runner. The tubes to the tilt/trim motor were disconnected so I've put them back onto the pump where they seem to have come from but I'm experiencing strange behaviour.

When trimming 'up' the trim piston works fine until it reaches full extent and then the sound of the pitch on the pump changes and the engine stops moving. When trimming 'down' the trim piston moves in but the engine doesn't move. If I then try and trim 'up' then the engine moves down until it meets the trim piston moving in the opposite direction.

To me this seems to indicate that a couple of the pipes are connected incorrectly and I'd appreciate if someone with the same gear could check their setup against mine.

The pump has four horizontal inline outlets. The one nearest the boat I'll call outlet 1 and this is connected to the starboard bottom of the tilt bar. Outlet 2 is connected to the top of the trim cylinder and outlet 3 seems to be blanked off. Outlet 4 has a machined bolt in which I assume is a bleed. On the bottom of the pump is another outlet which is connected to the bottom middle of the tilt bar.

Hey there. I've got a breakdown on mine that shows the position of the lines and it's probably similar to yours. Although I don't think I can upload pics on this forum.

Post your e-mail and i'll send you the breakdown.

Thanks Eric. I had two pipes incorrectly connected so now it raises correctly but lowers very slowly (tilt only - trim is ok. Your diagram shows a pipe going to the top of the tilt piston and into pump hole 'A'. I'd imagine this is the problem as the piston needs to be driven down but it is only moving under the engine weight. My starbd piston has a hole in it but it is very small and isn't threaded (vent only?) and I have a bolt in pump outlet 'A'.
I assume I need a new piston (or thread the existing one) and new pipe?

You're right. Without the pump pushing fluid into cylinder port "A", the only thing pushing your motor down would be gravity. If your pump head has a port "A" I would assume that's what it's intended for.

Let me know if you have anymore ?'s....
