Ahoy, Trig.

Any 2 stroke engine, revved up without load will stutter and "ring-a-ding-ding". If that is what is happening, it is normal.

Another thing most 2 strokes do is smoke. The more oil in the mix, the more smoke. You don't say what year your engine is, but if it was made after about 1970, it should use a 50:1 mix.

Good luck. :)

First off, don't needlessly rev your outboard in neutral or you'll be spitting metal pieces out of your mouth.(And I hope you do this in the water, test tank or flush unit attached) Outboards as a general rule when without a load run on the "fat" side or rich which would account for the sputtering or "missing" syptom. NOW... this is all based on the fact that under load or in gear the motor runs fine. If it does not..you may have carburator problems.....get kit take apart, clean all jets and little parts reassemble and adjust. Ifya' can't do this type of work..theres an outfit in Hollywood...Sanquini Marine will do the fixin's for ya at a good deal.
