Hi I've read a few posts here and I think I've found the problem but would like to get your expert advice

I have a Force 1990 90 hp that sometimes will start only when I rock the throttle forward and revese and then back into neutral. This happends so much that I have gotten into the "habit" of rocking it every time I try to start but lately
it takes a few of these these maneuvers to start the engine

Some of the posts have indicated that it could be a "neutral safety switch near your carb linkage"

I really would like to fix it since it freaks me (and my wife) out when I am trying to start the engine a mile from shore

Does this sound like the problem?

if yes, can I fix this or do I need a new part?
Is this in the engine compartment or by the throttle?

Thanks

I also hat that feeling of not knowing whether a motor is going to start. You are wise to get the problem sorted.
It does sound like the neutral switch is not working properly.

There is a small switch in the hand control that prevents the starter from working when not in neutral. Take your time opening up the hand controller as the cables & wires may want to spring out. When you get the control open you will see how the switch works. The switch may be gummed up with grease, moved out of place, corroded or worn out. Check it with a multi meter. I have seen similar switches in my local electronics shop. They only cost a few dollars. If you have any doubts about the switch just replace it.

Good luck

If it is an early Force engine, and I believe the 1990 is still the same as earlier engines--the neutral safety switch is just above the shift arm and below the carb throttle cam. There is a cam on the shift arm held by two pan head screws. Put the engine control in neutral and adjust the cam so it pushes in the white button. That should solve your problem
