hi, i have a 1993 bayliner with a force 90. The lower unit went bad(slips, grinds, etc in gear) so i'm looking to have it replaced. The marina says its cheaper to buy a new one than to have it repaired.
does that make sense?!?
anways, i'm now searching for remanufactured lower unit, but cant find anything.i'm getting desperate. Does anyone know where i could find one internet or anywhere??
also would other years fit my outboard, or would it have to be a '93?
thanks in advance!!

Re: Force 90 lower unit

Well, The forward gear and bearing is about 250-300, the rear gear is 200, the pinion is about 150 and the other bearings are about 60-100. Dog clutch about 100. Shims? who knows? Seal kit 100. So 950 in parts plus labor assuming drive shaft is usable, and you need special tools to shim the lower unit gears. So, yeah! unless you have access to cheap used gears and bearings it may well be better to buy good a used one.

Remanufactured ones go for about 1500. they should sell them right here at iboats.

Don't know exactly when Mercury started to put Force engines on Merc midlegs But if yours has a Force midleg and lower unit ( six 5/16 bolts plus one hidden inside the exhaust snout holding lower unit onto midleg)--Even though you probably have a 2 piece drive shaft--earlier years may fit. Trick is to be sure splines on drive shaft are the same.

Re: Force 90 lower unit

Thanks Frank!
i appreciate the help..
so basically, when i'm looking for another lower unit, my main concern is whether or not the splines on the driveshaft will line up correctly?
the only problem is that if i buy one online, i'm not really going to be able to see it before hand.. what do you think?
and yes, i have the 6 x 5/16 bolts

Iron
I have a 91'/90hp lower unit that the lower case cracked & failed due to improper winterization via the last owner. However everything else is there mechanically from a drive line standpoint. I'm just dismantling it for fun and general interest at the moment.
Send me a PM if you are interested in part (or all?) of this thing...or if you need some references etc.
(Note: Frank A would probably be able to tell you if it's 'innards' are compatible.)
Regards,
BP
