I have a 1998 120 force outboard. Been having trouble mid throttle when powering up feels like engine has a really bad miss. I removed the wires from the coil packs one at a time. The bottom two coils make a significant difference when unplugged the top two do not. I was told to swap them to see if the problem follows the coil packs and if so to replace those two. If this is not the problem does anyone know what my next step should be?

If the problem does not follow after switching the CDI packs, it means the problem is not with the CDI's instead it is either with the stator or with the trigger. The next logical troublshooting then will be to read resistance on the stator and also the trigger. Personally, before switching, I'll just check for sparks in each spark plug using an inline spark tester. Costs less than $10 from any auto parts store.

If there's spark on all plugs, then I recommend checking the mouth of each carb to see if there is any indication of excessive fuel blow back, i.e. fuel oil mix dripping from carbs when motor is running. This is an indication you have reed problem which is very common with the late 120's.

If there is no indication of excessive fuel blow back from the carbs, then you will need to check for compression and post your readings.

Welcome,

Do a compression test.

Then outboard ignition.com has test procedures for your system.

You need to make sure of what your testing.

They used different stators and testing for them can be different.
