Force engine problem

I ran out of gas with my 1987 force engine. Ipumped the bowl in my fuel line which got me enough gas to get to safety. I was towed to a fuel stationand refueled. Now my engine restarted but raw fuel was coming out the exhaust. When I got home I found the following condition. The engine runs but if I pullout one of the top pulgs it stalls. I then removed all 4 spark plugs and cranked the engine over. There is a normal amount of gas in the top 2 cylinders but raw gas spray out in a huge amount from the bottom cylinder through the spark plug hole and little or no gas to cylinder #3. All 4 cylinders have spark and the bowl in both carb work. Anyone know what could be stuck open to cause lack of gas to #3 cyl and a flood of gas to #4 cylinder.Any help would be appreciated as repair shops are takling big bucks to look at it as they don't usually work on force and seem to be at an advantage. I am going to pull the cards off and lokk for something obvious but could use help. Thanks Ralph.

Re: Force engine problem

Ralph, sounds like the carb gas float is stuck down and allowing gas to run by the needle valve into the 2 flooded cylinders. Probably jammed open when you ran out of gas and the float sank to the bottom of the float bowl. The other gas problem description seems to indicate that you pumped some dirt into the carbs when the tank ran dry.

Re: Force engine problem

Sinking Slowly. I found my problem!! I found a fitting where the gas line enterd the block. One side looks like a chech valve and the other side had a rubber diaphram. Apparently the diaprhram ruptured when I pumped too hard and there is a small opening to the block. This caused fuel to flow out exhaust and to be sucked into the bottom cylinder through the reeds. A few dollars for a new gasket and it runs like a new engine. Thanks for your response, Ralph.

Re: Force engine problem

That check valve and rubber diaphram is your fuel pump. The compression from your crankcase pulses thru the hose that is connected to the powerhead. It causes the diaphram to pump the gas. A rebuild kit can be had for $10 or $15. Takes about 10 minutes to do.

Chances are it just got old. They tend to get brittle and get holes in them. Do not use any gas that has alcohol added to it, as this tends to dry them out faster.

Rosco. It cost me $3.67 to get a new gasket. As for the gas, I never used gas containing alcohol.

Slowly sinking - I took the boat out and it ran perfect. Now I need to adjust new float in my gas tank to read more accuratly. Any idea approximatly how much gas I'd burn per hour with twin 125 hp Force say at 3600 to 3800 rpm.
