I just bought a Bayliner (first boat) and I took it to the lake today and went about 14 mins into riding it and I heard a big loud grinding, bang boom noise from the engine and then the engine winded out and I turned it off. Tried to start it again and started fine BUT WOULD NOT MOVE AT ALL. Was stuck in the middle of the lake with no paddle and no one around until a guy in a boat stopped about an hour later. But What Was That Loud Noise? My friend thinks it was the U joints.? If it was is it expensive to fix? What would you recommend?

hello
could be ujoints could be the coupler could be the outdrive let go. time to study the problem, check the lower unit drive oil. thenbuy a service manual and start removing parts or pay the marina. the L drive was not real popular and expensive to fix. good luck and keep posting.

Re: Force L-Drive 120HP

hey i will try to help you out. I have a ldrive.
If you broke the u joints not a big deal but if damaged the yoke you are. I took my drive shaft to a local machine shop and they put on a new bearing and u joints plus the seal for 220 bucks.
A Lot cheap than the dealer.

To check the drive shaft all you have to do is pull the pins out. You dont even half to pull the lower unit apart. The pins i am talking about are the ones the lower unit pivots on.

To pull the pins out find a bolt that screws in the center and some washers. Then find a piece of pipe that is bigger than the pin. Cut the pipe so that it is 4 inches long and then screw the bolt in the pin with the washer. You are making a cheap but effective puller. Then when you got them out make sure the shift cable is off.

This post should be under the Chrysler/Force heading, not the Mercury/Mariner heading. Force is not Mercury.

Craig
