Force Lower Unit has crack need replacement

After removing my boat from the water at the end of the summer, I noticed there was a 3 inch crack in the lower unit. I have a 1990 Force outboard 90hp. I am looking to get a used lower unit possibly on ebay or the like for a cheap fix. Can anyone suggest how to determine which lower units will fit my engine? The MN of the engine is not visible because of the salt water. I am hoping there is another place I can look for the model number. Any suggestions on how to get a model of the engine or a PN of the unit is greatly appreciated.

Any lower unit from any 75 HP up to 140 Hp will fit. Any year from 1979 Chrysler up to at least 1994 Mercury Force will fit. After 1990 the lower units had different water pumps and drive shafts but they still fit the earlier engines.

You can also use either single exhaust lower units or dual exhaust lower units. Not sure if there is any real advantage to dual exhaust lowers and they seem to use a larger hub prop so you will also need to by another prop if your existing lower unit is not dual exhaust.

A dual exhaust lower unit will expel exhaust through both the exhaust snout and the prop hub. It will have a vertical set of water intake holes between the gearcase torpedo and the cavitation plate.

Where are you located? When I bought a spare 85 HP several months ago, the guy threw in an extra lower unit, which I don't need. The skeg is gone and I don't know what the internals look like, but the rest of the case is sound.

I forgot to mention: If the lower internals are OK and the crack is not too bad, why not have it welded? If you drain the oil, a good welder will only charge about 50-100 to weld the crack. Cost effective.

Oh yeah---from 1990 up they had a two piece drive shaft. If you buy a later unit, be certain the upper drive shaft and collar comes with it.

The option to have it welded was on the table. I had a few people look at it and they said the unit was toast. There are 2 cracks and a fatigue line connecting the two cracks. Any repair wouldn't last long.

Re: Force Lower Unit has crack need replacement

I am wondering which questions I should be asking when trying to purchase a direct bolt on replacement for my unit via the internet. ie distance from top of water pump to end of shaft, # of splines, bolt pattern. Is this information crucial and are these the correct questions to be asking? Anything esle I should be finding out? Thanks for the help.
