Force outboard motor opinions

I am thinking about purchasing a Monark 16 ft boat (aluminum hull) and it has a 40 H.P Force motor on it. The boat, motor and trailer are all from 1998, and they all look like they came out of a show room with no use on them hardly at all. My question:

A few people I know told me to stay away from the Force outboard motors because they are "junk". They tell me they tend to blow up! Any truth to this? Does anyone on here like the Force motors? Just looking for opinions fellas, thank you!

They are not junk they are extremely simple reliable motors that just work. I don't know why they get a bad rap their basic design has been around since the 60s. If you asked this in the force/Chrysler forum you would get better answers. Ask the moderator to move it

The mechanical part of the engine is solid engineering, but the ignition systems and carburetors have been less than stellar

As you ask in this Chrysler/Force forum you will get a subjective opinion cause we are keen on these brands.

Well as stated before the basic engineering of Force is from the sixties.
From the begining West Bend that Chrysler bought in 1965 to get into the OB market.
In early 80.s Chrysler was forced by the US goverment to get out of the boat buisness and 1984 was the last Chrysler banded OB.
US marine bought it and in late 80.s Brunswick (Mercury) took over Bayliner and got the OB manufacturing in to the bargain.

Force was a cheap brand from Mercury and a entry for people to boating.
The bad reputation was due to many new boaters did not maintain the Engines as is should.
Mercury started to put parts to their OB as gearcase and ignition system in the middle of 90.s.

Force is a basic engine and no rocket science. Easy to maintain, no better or worse then other brands from same time.
Maybe a bit hard on gas because of old school design.

If the price is right BUY!!!
Some don't know what they are talking about.

IF??? the owner takes care of the motor it will last as long as you take care of it.
My twin 88/85hp both run like new.

I routinely fish 15mi offshore.

At 40 hp your not gonna win any races but will have an easy to maintain and good running motor.

An engine "failure" is usually a humans "failure" to maintain.

The 'Forces are junk" rumor works in our favor.
Junk = lower prices.
Laugh all the way to the bank.

I've owned two Forces. Both were reliable and a lot easier to work on than my mercs. Mine were a 35 on a pontoon and a 50 on a Bayliner. Neither one was a powerhouse, but they never left me stranded.
