I was wondering how reliable and good these engines are? I know Mercury bought out the company but what year was that and why did they give up? Are these motors as crappy as everyone tells me? I am looking to buy a boat with twin 120's on the rear but i am very hesitant with these motors on it. Please let me know.

Re: Force Outboards-1993 120 HP

Mercury did indeed buy Force and subsequently discontinued it. They refer to Force as a "value priced" motor...'nuff said? If you take great care of them, they'll run a long time but they do require regular, on-going maintenance. I just got rid of my Force 150. I was tired of sinking money into it...

Parts are going to become hard to find. Last year it took 3 months to source a new tilt/trim and an exhaust mainfold.

Re: Force Outboards-1993 120 HP

I have a 92/120 hp force, I just changed out the impeller for the 1st time this year, I've only changed the lower gear lube once, the only problems I've ever had was I replaced the starter, (new 1=159.00) and a couple of new batteries, other than that it runs great, I wouldn't buy the 150hp, thats the 1 I've heard alot about but the 120's to me are good, mine keeps starting right up, good luck,

Re: Force Outboards-1993 120 HP

I have a '93 120 Force. Few problems here and there, but overall a very solid engine, I think. Mine runs smooth and fast.
I guess it depends on the engine. 91Formula is right. I have also heard the 150's were not built well. The 120 seems the most solid from what I have heard, not just because I have one.
Since they are 120's I would say you should consider buying it, but only if the price is right. You will have to keep up on maintenance.
Make sure you at least get a compression test on both engines. The 2 strokes will run fairly smooth with a dead cylinder. Hope this helps.
