I'm currently looking for a new (used boat) and one in paticular is a 1988 19ft. Bayliner Trophy Center Console Fishermen with a 85 force outboard. My question to the forum is,Are they decent reliable motors and where did they come from? The Boat has been sitting for over a year so motor hasnt been started, the seller says it was running when it was put away and every thing looks like its spent it life in fresh water. Also what would it take to fire it up to hear it run?He doesnt want to spend any time on it and the price is negotiable. And I Dont want to buy a boat anchor. LOL

Re: Force Outboards?

You have a good question on your hands. Force outboards are not the greatest outboards ever made. They are sorta throw away motors. Quahoggers like them because they get new motors every couple of years. It is a very cheap imatation of a Mercury. I would say if you get it for a good deal then yes. They can be good motors if you take care of them. good luck

Before you buy it make sure you run the motor and look it over real well. Do a compression test on it. If they are uneven you might have a problem depends on how much each one are off. Make sure you have new clean gas when you run it. Check to see how it is pumping water!

Try a search on this site for 'Bayliner'.

Even try a search for 'Force'.

Obviously both products are entry level (low price) and gives you about that.

If well maintained both are fairly good. If they suit your need and planned use, all is fine.

If you plan on getting high-end gear for serious use, a good checking will show you to look elsewhere.

Gentelmen,Thank you for your reply. What would a good compression test be on that particular motor? Gonna be the fist boat for me,Tarpon and redfishin maybe offshore 10-15 miles.Retired heavy equipment mechanic so grease is in the blood after fishin..

Oh.. Going 15 miles off shore in a 19' Bayliner with a Force sounds like a thing you'd do only if you were experienced with your gear and exactly knew how far to take it.

Taking entry level gear out for this isn't really hitting the spot it's aimed for.

I'd kindly suggest you look for better quality even if it has to be older. Offshore can get quite rough and you have to have both a boat and a motor you can trust. Plus a backup motor of some kind.
