hi guys,bought a boat with a 92 force 50 engine.
had her put in our marina, went to use her for a days fishing did not get far as the engine got very hot very quickly, shut her down and got back on the berth, there was no water from the pee hole, the seller asured us that their was a new impeller plugs etc, i managed to get the lower unit off checked the impeller which was perfect, reassembled it tried the engine and i had a good spray of water through the pee hole, also the thermostat was stuck open, now for my question, what could have caused the lack of cooling water, the engine seems to run ok now if a little rough at tickover and sometimes cuts out, will i have done any further damage to the powerhead, what checks can i make.thanks in advance and sorry for the story.

jglover, the mechanic failed to align the water tube into the powerhead. You did it right. nevjb

Nice job. The Water tube was one of the "make sure" I did when I replaced my water pump on my 125 Force. I figure if I stay around and read some of these posts I'll learn a thing or too.

Re: force overheated

A mild or short duration, overheat may do no permanent damage. Or it may have caused some damage.

You might want to check the compression on each cylinder.
Also, check the sparkplugs now, and again after the next few uses. Look for a "clean" plug, which would indicate water leaking past a blown head gasket.

I'm not a professional mechanic, so take my advise with a grain of salt. As far as I know, overheating causes very distinct problems. Either you seize a piston (and obviously that hasn't happened) or it will cause warpage or a crack in the head or block, leading to a water leak and compression loss. If your compression checks out OK, I'd say you didn't do any damage.
