I noticed that my 50 hp Force won't hold the motor in the "up" posistion for very long without the motor lowering itself back down. At firsat I thought it was because there was no battery attached to it, but even when I left it connected, it still did it. I got looking and felt the bottom of the unit and it was wet with a reddish fluid, so I assume it has a slow leak. IS there a way to fill the reservoir in the lift and is there a source for rebuild parts? Also, how hard would it be to rebuild the unit? I should probably add that the unit is marked "prestolite" on the side. Will a unit off of a 1990 50 hp fit on this one, it's a 1988.?

pick up a Clymer manual for Force outboards. lots of info on trim and tilt. for parts go to sierramarine.com after market parts. sounds like your cylinder rings are allowing the fluid pressure to leak by allowing it to lose pressure and lower itself. also try mercury parts for rebuild material.

it is your pump. motor will probably give out in next year or so too. what causes pumps to bleed down (old rubber seals) also causes water to get in trim motor. You can get pump rebuilt and new seals put into motor for around $120.
Check on ebay.
