Hey guys I finally got this thing in th ewater prop hub set puttered around for half an hour runs great. My problem now is when cold starting and after running for 30 minutes when I go from neurtal at dead stop to forward or reverse the motor stalls I have to go from neutral to either forward or reverse unless I do it very quick all in one motion it will stall can't do it slow or it dies. I do need to put some seafoam through it but both tanks have stabil and oil mix in it. will do seafoam on next tank any ideas what I can try until them or ideas what is wrong its an 86 force 85hp. I would appreciate any help.

Do you have a tach?What's the RPM at idle in the water in gear? Should be about 750-800.
Do a spark and compression test.J

You are supposed to shift an outboard quickly to save wear and tear on the lower unit.

As jerry says, idle in forward gear should be 800. 900 won't hurt.

There is no tach done compression test all three were almost identical pressures. don't remember the numbers but within clymers specs. I don't think when pulling off the trailer in reverse having to shift as quick as I do is normal also when idling at the dock allowing fam to board it has to have a little rpm to keep running. when I want to take off I have to push in the button to engage the forward momentum and pull the throttle back then forward as fast as I have never had to do this on any boat I have ever driven.
Does anyone else agree this is normal?

Your idle speed may be set too low. Try increasing it just a little bit and see if it helps.

do I adjust all carbs the same amount?

Idle speed adjustment is not on the carbs. It is found on the tower shaft at the bottom (its a screw up against the block with a stop nut) #21/#22 in the diagram. http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/parts/1254_11.cfm

The carb adjustment screws are for fuel/air mixture not idle adjustment.
