I am thinking about buying a boat with a 50 hp force engine, the model # is 507X9A. Does any one know what year the motor is? Are these motors well build?

I have the same motor.. My experince has been that the thing always starts and is easy to work on, but it is not overly powerful. You will probably be fine if 50Hp is at the high end of what you need. If it at the low or medium end, you will not be happy because this is more like a 35 or 40hp motor than 50hp. Hp on this motor was measured at the crank as opposed to the prop shaft as other motors are. This results in a less than 50hp rating the shaft, or so I've heard.

I push a 21ft pontoon with mine and it pushes along nicely with just me in it. But get a few people and there is not much grunt.

I also operated a 24ft pontoon with a merc 50 and it had much more oomph with 12 people on it..

This motor also tends to foul plugs at low speeds and lean sneezes when cold. I have heard that these are fairly common with this motor. It is also not a good sounding motor and very dirty running. You will pay more for a merc or OMC 50hp, but they are probably worth it..
