Bought a 1988 and I couldn't start it. Solution is for the first start of the day,
is to squirt raw gas down the throat of the
two carbs before cranking. Then it works well all day. Both mixture srews are set to HALF turns only for the best performance.
Compression is 145lbs on all four cylinders.
WOT is perfect. Elec. chokes are adjusted.

I have a 1991 120 L-drive and seem to have the starting problem on the first start of weekend. I've been able to get it started by playing with the throttle about 20-30 times and choking it like crazy.

Re: FORCES 125hp: Puzzelling problem!

Having followed a number of postings over the three months I believe the cause is a faulty check valve in the fuel pump. Soon I'll question the mechanic if there is an antisiphon on board or its just the check valve that could be the cause. I've put a small hole in the plastic deflector plates to
get a good shot of gas down the venturis.

------------------

Ive experienced the same thing when I had a force 150, and it was the cranking speed. It took a fresh battery to turn it fast enough to start. Same thing on my old merc 90, has to turn FAST to fire right up, if theres any hesitation when the starter engages, it will take 5 min to get it to fire off.

Half turn is too lean - I have the same engine - correct mixture is half way between lean roll off and rich roll off - IN GEAR AT IDLE (very low speed) - Mine is right about 1 turn out.

The fact that you are squirting gas in proves it.

My 1990 120hp had the same problem. I installed a siphon ball that you pump by hand just like on a portable fuel tank. I put this just before the fuel pump and it seemed to solve the problem.
