Hello all,
I have a glastron carlson CV 18ss with a ford 302 and a volvo penta 270 in it. I have the engine out and apart and could use lots of help as this is my fisrt boat. Boat has been sitting for about 8 years and I couldn't get it to turn so apart it went. I cant seem to find another person who has or had on of these boats so info is scarce. The 302 windsor has 351 heads and a 4bbl carb with log style manifoldson it. All seems to be original. Engine is out and I'm ready to go. Here are my questions.

Budget is 5k tops!!

Rebuild or replace? Machine shop is around 3k for block.

If I replace will all the other parts fit?

Are there any engine exterios that should be upgraded?

Where can I find parts for the VP 270 outdrive? Bellows was torn and the u-joint is
rusty so I assume it should be replaced.

Do I need to remove the VP transom assembly? If so why and what needs to be
replaced?

Are there manuals on this combo? I've searched google and can't find anything.

Is this possible on my budget?

I want to do this right the first time so we can enjoy the summer without constent complications.

Carlos

oh my god, $3k to rebuild a ford 302 engine?? lol!! those guys are taking you for a spin, seriously.

just look locally on craigslist for a ford 302 or a later 5.0 engine and swap your intake/distributor (cam as well if you find a roller 5.0 engine as the distributor gear will be different material), exhaust, etc over to the long block and be done with it. should be able to find engines from $300-600 in running condition.

Got the engine almost all apart. Is there a trick to get the intake manifold off and the heads off? All the bolts are out and light tapping isn't doing the trick. Will I crack something if I hit it too hard? They seem like there really on there good.

Re: Ford 302 & VP 270??????????????

Welcome!! Sweet looking boat.

If you love the hull, which is really good looking BTW, I would repower totally with a newer drivetrain. If you could find a rotted out early to mid 80s bayliner with an operating drivetrain, 305 chevy with a 270 outdrive (common in the bigger bowriders and cuddies of that era), I think you'd be money ahead. Parts for that old "glastron" brand engine will be hard to find. The newer drivetrain would still fit the hole i your hull without modification. The Ford motors are fine engines, but they haven't been used for many years and marine parts are rare.

Whichever way you choose, I hope you'll post your results and pics as you go. Feel free to ask lots of questions, there's lots of help to had here.

Good Luck!!

If your flywheel cover is the two piece version (which I think Glastron used back then) you should be able to split it and use any GM marine motor with a Borg Warner type bellhousing/flywheel cover. This opens up a lot more options.
Plus you can get a professionally rebuilt 302 long block for around $1400. Or for an extra 25lbs you could put a 351 in there ;)

P.S. there are plenty of new and used Ford marine parts out there.

PM me if more info needed

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the fords, I just wouldn't buy a new one for a boat. I would seriously consider buying a donor boat. We still don't know the condition of the outdrive...

Exhaust manifolds would also be needed. I wouldn't bolt 40 year old manifolds to a new engine. I don't know if you can find the manifolds for that motor, and if you did they're another $600+.

Just thinking practically.

Why PM? Let's all learn.:)
