Ford 5.0 EFI - Timing Question

Hi Guys,

After a couple months of building up a new long block and moving /replacing parts from my old engine, it's in the boat and running. I put about an hour of time on it in the driveway, but waited until it was installed to perform final setup.

Here is my question. She's running really rough at idle and even though I can spin it up in RPM's smoothly, it feels like there might be a slight miss someplace. I have set the timing in base mode to 5 deg BTDC per the OEM shop manual. Have also played with it up to 10 degrees. I have read on various mustang forums that once the SPOUT is reconnected it should advance to about 20 degrees at idle. Mine does not do that, it doesn't change at all. Using an advance timing gun I AM getting what appears to be proper advance at least through 3000 RPMS.

Is this condition normal? Meaning there is no advance once the SPOUT is reconnected?

Thanks,
Mike

Re: Ford 5.0 EFI - Timing Question

I know there is no differences for the marine application.. Just wanted to know what the behavior should be. I recall there being an audible change in previous years, just never verified it with the gun. I swapped distributors with no change, sho it's not the PIP. Also swapped a new TFI module and MAP sensor last night. no change in idle. At this point I have all new sensors in the intake manifold, a new IAC, a new MAP and a new TFI. As well as two distributors. New plugs cap rotor and wires. Not sure where to go next other than the EEC.

I also sent out the injectors to be serviced and tuned. New fuel pumps and new regulator.. It's definitively missing a cyl.. I have to try to track it down.. Any suggestions would be welcomed

Re: Ford 5.0 EFI - Timing Question

If it's the same then timing should advance about 10 degrees with the spout in, The timing advancement is done via the pcm, If you have a wiring diagram I'd first check the wire itself making sure it's not damaged, even if timing is off it will run smooth, Send me yoor Phone number and I'm sure I can work with you to figure it out, Iv'e been building 5.0s for 10 plus years and have seen it all with problems Email Trymy5@aol.com. One quick check too is if you have a vaccum gauge check vaccum running should be 18 inches and steady, If so then you have a fuel or spark problem. I have even installed one of these motors into a Infiniti.. Good Luck
