I just bought a 1995 boat with a Volvo engine. The engine is a Ford, actually. I was just wondering, since Ford didn't say in the marine engine field long, what type of engines are they for boats.

Thanks
Greg

I am no Volvo expert, but although I prefer GM engines think the Fords I have been around were good engines, the things that In didn't like were for the most part conversion problems, cold blooded, some surged ( the mercs with Rochester carbs ran great), didn't care for some of the Mallory ign. system, but there are alot of them out there still picking them off and thats counts more than anything---Bob

Actually, Ford build marine engines almost as long as GM, just not in the same quantity. Mercruiser used them from '71-'77 or so, as well as Volvo and OMC. The last ones were '96 or later I think? They were in the marine market before that with the older Interceptors, but I know nothing about them other than seeing them in pictures of old wooden boats.

I have a '76 Mercruiser witha 302 and it is a good engine, but not a stock as it once as. A good friend had a '94 Volvo with a 245hp in a 21' cuddy and he loved it.

Most of the boats that I work on have the ford engines in them from carb to EFI, but most have little or no problems. But the 351W is a great relable engine.
