The coil pack wires are not removable?? They should be like short plug wires.

Use di-lectric (sp?) grease on the plugs. You might have cracked coil pack or just a bad with. I would try the grease first and remember not to pull the wire off the plug... pull it by the boot.

Nevermind. Just bought a different manual and answered my own question.

No plug wires. A coil on each plug. They sure don't want you working on these things anymore.

Re: Ford Escape... No Plug Wires???

Your engine is a COP setup. This means that there is a rubber boot between the coil and the plug. This looks like a funky spark plug wire boot. These are noted for arcing through. You should be able to buy them at the local professional parts store. I agree with using di-electric grease. This will not help eliminate the misfire without repair or replacement of the faulty part. Advanced Auto Parts can scan the vehicle and pull any codes for the misfire. If the check engine ligh tis on becaus eof the misfire you will have a code corresponding with the misfiring cylinder. It's relatively easy to replace these spark plugs. You need to take the upper intake off to remove the rear plugs, but the intake seals are supposed to be reuseable.
Do not skimp on the quality of the plugs you use, use OEM equivalent, like Autolite. Also, CHECK COMPRESSION! I had a lower mileage Escape with a misfire. After replacing spark plugs, coil boots, and moving coils around, I finally got a compression tester and found one cylinder had very low compression. Hopefully you don't have this drastic a problem. Fortunately for me I have a scan tool, so finding the code and rescanning after repairs was easy for me.

Good luck.
David L. Moore
Moore Automotive

Re: Ford Escape... No Plug Wires???

Thanks for the advice David. I was wondering about the intake seal. The miss only happens occasionally on a cold engine with wet conditions. No engine light warning. Miss goes away when engine warm.

The only other time this has appeared was when I hit a big puddle. Straightened out in a minute or two.

I would think that I should be able to some arcing trace. We'll take it down and see.
