I'm a little hazy on this but I recall it means something like shippers can store containers or product there without declaring it imported...or something like that. The intent being the product is just passing thru.

When nissian bought land here and built a factory they built a fence areound all of it and put those signs up.it is actually from my understanding the property of japan. One boy here gaught shooting a deer on there property and from my understanding they actually tryed to send him to japan to be ruled and sentenced by there laws.thats what the big fuss was anyway.this is just a ######up mess when foreign countrys can by land here and redeam it as there on country.

Embassies and Consulates are legally territory of the country that owns them. I am not aware that any other property counts.

Re: Foreign Trade Zone?

Foreign Trade Zones or Free Trade Zones are set up to avoid paying US import taxes until the product leaves the zone. My Daughter bought a Ford Ranger pickup up here made in the US -trade free zone-. In order to get it imported to the US she had pay duty taxes on the Mitsubishi engine as it never had US import taxes paid as it was built in a Free Trade Zone and exported to Canada (paid no US taxes on foreign parts). Most Ports have land zoned this way and containers/Auto/etc. can stay in the zone and only pay taxes if they enter the US. Like Portland Ore, and Seattle, Wash. They land a lot of stuff that gets trucked to Canada or reloaded for other forein ports - so no US duty while on /US soil. These zones were set up to avoid taxes when landing cargo. If shiped to a plant that is a trade free zone, but together and shipped out of the country -- no US Duty Taxes.

There is a Free Trade Zone (FTZ) in Port Canaveral, FL that the cruise ships use. They basically handle all the customs paperwork to allow stuff to get on an off of the ships.

FTZ Info
