In my hast and excitement to get on the water I topped off one of my little 6gal tanks with 3 gal’s fresh fuel. I’m running a 1985 Johnson 75hp. Realized after running on and off an hour or so at varying speeds that I didn’t add additional oil for the new gas. I figure I had about a 2 ½ gal in at 50:1. I didn’t notice anything different with the way it ran but am wondering if I may have done any damage. Could I be able to tell? Anything I can do from here (I know add oil). Don’t know if it makes a difference but water and air temp was about 40*.

you are probably safe. as you said add enough to make it right, and don't forget again. also use seafoam fuel treatment, per direction on the can.

2 1/2 gallons at 50:1 would be about 6 or 7 ounces of oil; in 6 gallons that would be about 120:1. Have you tested your overtemp horn lately?

Probably okay. A compression test might give you some comfort.

I'll test the overtemp. It was fine when I checked about a year ago. Is seafoam gas treatment different then Staybill (sp... the red stuff)? I’m hoping the cool water temps and the easy running due to light rain saved my butt. Hate to dump more cash into this ole motor. Thanks for the quick replies.

stabil treats gasoline - seafoam treats your motor - cleans out carbon deposits -it's good stuff.

It can also be used as a replacement for Stabil.

Your probably fine. Remove the spark plugs and have a look. Any shiny metal on them? If not, probably OK.

While they're out, run a compression test.

I accidently ran my 88 50 evinrude at 100:1 all most a whole season of light duty weekends.Probably would never have been a problem until my son had his annual ski weekend ouch!!

Even if you had no oil at all, it wouldn't overheat to the point of setting off the alarm. The first indication would be siezure and total destruction. Since that hasn't happened, give thanks and go on. Make a note of what brand oil you did have in there and keep using it, it's good stuff. Or, sometimes, some people do get lucky.

Re: Forgot to add 2 stroke oil.

Back in the '60's McCullough had a little can of oil that they marketed as 100:1....a little red thing and it may have been somewhere around 4 oz. It came out about the time their 3 cyl 60 hp hit the street.

I thought it most unusual as the industry was just getting into the 50:1 game and here comes this smaller OB mfgr out with 100...course they had 50 for normal applications. Had no idea as to what it was.

I think 50:1 is a safe number OEM's figured for all around usage and with a good grade of oil, 100:1 probably isn't all that bad. Didn't John/Rude recently have 100 on the market for a short while? Hope you made out on it ok.

I had an '87 Johnson 30hp and it was marked on it 100:1. I believe in the late 80's several models were and then they retracted it shortly afterwards. Maybe the 85's were 100:1 also and thus why no harm came to it?

I'd bet you're OK. A compression test will tell but if the motor idles as good as it did before it should be OK.

With oil injection you wouldn't have to worry about that.....
