Hello,

Im looking to upgrade and have narrowed down my choices to a 1998 Formula 280ss twin 5.7 efi or Sea Ray 280ss twin 5.7 efi
Although i like more the shape of the formula, the sea ray is almost 2000 pounds lighter (6300 vs 8200) therefore im thinking i would get better fuel efficiency or higher speed at lower rpm...
Any thoughts out there on which one is a better choice?????

We found the Formula cuddies to be quite a bit smaller than the Sea Rays. Those Formulas sure do plow through the rough water though. My boss passed us in his Formula during a squall once and they were still sipping their wine. As far as the fuel goes,,, he says he doesn't even LOOK at the pump when he gets gas 'cause it ruins his whole weekend.

Gotta wonder what you're not getting with the SeaRay that is 2000 lbs lighter.

I have a 1998 Formula 280 SS. It rides very well. Get one with twins. Boat should run around 52-54 mph. Cabin is smaller but I'm 6'3" and I can sleep comfortably & use the head. I bought my boat used from Loto fully loaded except windlass for $24k. She needed a little work but well worth it. Only thing I regret was not getting a 330ss due to AC. When looking at these boats check in the cabin. There is a cubby hole next to the stairs. Pull up carpet and see if that drain is getting water. Then pull carpet up just outside that hole. There is another drain there too. Boat had 120 gallon tank. Costs me $480 to fill up. If I don't top off and cruise around normally it will last a month. I plan on adding a windlass, mercury racing controls, and bottom paint over the winter. Lastly buy a trailer for it to sit on. I need one.

Re: Formula 280ss versus Sea Ray 280ss

Hi everybody, after testing both boats i decided to purchase the Formula 280ss. Although the Sea Ray is 600 hp and lighter it felt very sluggish in comparison to the Formula with 520 hp. All i can think of is the hull design, the Formula is a rocket and get out of the hole in a heart beat. Even my wife who originally wanted the Sea Ray because of all the comforts and detail of it was impressed by the Formula's performance.
Thanks everybody for the input.
